OVERVIEW

Trip Overview

Some Andean routes feel quiet, remote, and strong from the first hour on the road. The Seven Lakes of Ausangate is one of them.

This full-day hike takes you to the highlands of Pacchanta, a small community at the foot of the Ausangate snow peak. From there, you walk through a circuit of clear mountain lakes, open puna grasslands, alpacas, stone paths, cold wind, and wide views of snow-covered peaks.

The route is not as famous as Rainbow Mountain, but for many travelers it feels more personal. There is more space, fewer crowds on many days, and a deeper sense of being in a real high-Andean setting.

With Andeara, the day includes early hotel pick-up, tourist transport, breakfast, lunch, entrance support, and a professional guide. After the hike, you may also use the Pacchanta hot springs for an extra local payment, which is a great way to warm the body after walking above 4,000 meters.

This is not a technical hike, but it is a high-altitude route. The beauty is real, and so is the effort.

Day by Day Schedule

Day highlight: Today you walk through a circuit of high-altitude lakes beneath Ausangate, with the option to finish the route in the thermal waters of Pacchanta.

Your transport will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco between 4:30 and 5:00 AM. This is an early mountain departure, so we recommend preparing your backpack the night before and wearing warm layers from the beginning.

The road from Cusco to Pacchanta takes around 3 hours, according to the original itinerary. The drive passes through rural Andean areas, highland roads, small towns, and open landscapes that become colder and more remote as you approach the Ausangate area.

In Pacchanta, you will have an energy breakfast before the hike. This is also the moment when the guide gives route information, safety advice, and basic recommendations for walking at altitude.

At around 8:00 AM, your guide will give an introduction to the route. At around 8:30 AM, the hike begins.

The circuit moves through high-altitude terrain near Ausangate. Depending on the route conditions and timing, you may pass lakes such as Pucacocha, Alqacocha, Otorongo, and other lagoons in the circuit. Some route descriptions mention Otorongo Macho, Otorongo Hembra, Puca Cocha, Alqa Cocha, Ccomer Cocha, Azul Cocha, and Pata Cocha as part of the Seven Lakes route.

The trail is not highly technical, but the altitude makes the day demanding. You will walk over dirt paths, rocky ground, grassy slopes, and open puna. The air is thin, the sun can be strong, and cold wind may come quickly from the mountain.

Technical details for the hike

  • Starting area: Pacchanta community
  • Starting altitude: Around 4,200–4,300 m.a.s.l.
  • Highest route areas: Around 4,630–4,650 m.a.s.l.
  • Approximate walking distance: Around 7–10 km, depending on the route version
  • Approximate walking time: Around 4–6 hours, depending on pace and conditions
  • Trail surface: Dirt, stones, grassland, wet ground in some areas, possible mud during rainy season
  • Difficulty: Moderate to demanding because of altitude
  • Main challenge: Thin air, cold wind, long walking time, changing weather
  • Best moments: Lake circuit, Ausangate views, alpacas, open highland silence, snow peaks

During the hike, your guide will explain the area, the local communities, the lakes, and the mountain setting. On clear days, you can see Ausangate and nearby peaks with strong detail. On colder or cloudier days, the route can feel more dramatic, with mist, wind, and shifting light over the lakes.

Around midday, you return toward Pacchanta for lunch. After the hike, travelers may choose to use the Pacchanta hot springs for an extra local payment. Several operators list this fee as a small cash payment, commonly around S/5 to S/15, depending on current local rules and service conditions.

At around 1:30 PM, the return trip to Cusco begins according to the original plan. Arrival in Cusco is planned around 6:30 PM, depending on traffic, road conditions, weather, lunch timing, hot springs timing, and group pace.

  • Hike through a high-Andean landscape — the route includes open puna, cold wind, high-altitude grassland, alpacas, rocky ground, and wide views of Ausangate, Jampa, Pucapunta, Tinke, and the Qayangate range.
  • A mountain route with real altitude — several route references place the circuit between roughly 4,200 and 4,650 meters above sea level, with some sources listing a top elevation of about 4,630 meters.
  • Breakfast and lunch in Pacchanta — the day is organized around the local community, where travelers usually eat before and after the hike.
  • Optional hot springs after the walk — Pacchanta is known for thermal baths. Current tour references list the hot springs entrance as a local extra payment, often around S/5 to S/15, depending on the operator and local conditions.
  • A strong alternative to the busiest one-day hikes — the Ausangate lakes route feels more open and less crowded than some classic Cusco day hikes, although visitor levels may change by season and weather.
  • Good for travelers who want more than a viewpoint — this tour gives you a walking circuit, several lakes, local community life, mountain views, and the option to finish with thermal water.

Hotel Pick-Up

Pick-up is scheduled between 4:30 and 5:00 AM from your hotel in Cusco. Some streets in the historic center are narrow or restricted for tourist vehicles, so we may coordinate a nearby meeting point if direct access is not possible.

Please send your hotel name and address before the tour date so our operations team can organize the route properly.

Luggage Storage

This is a full-day high-altitude hike, so you should bring only a small daypack. Large luggage is not allowed during the route unless approved in advance.

If you need to store luggage, coordinate with your hotel or with our team before the tour date.

Payment Conditions

A reservation payment may be required to confirm your space. This allows us to organize transport, guide assignment, restaurant coordination, entrance logistics, and daily operation.

Any remaining balance must be paid before departure or according to the terms given by the reservations team. Some local fees may require direct payment in soles because local controls and optional services are managed separately.

This tour does not include Machu Picchu, so availability is usually easier than tours that require Machu Picchu entry tickets or Inca Trail permits.

For private service, earlier booking is recommended, especially for travelers who need a slower pace, special health support, custom timing, or more time at the hot springs.

Travel Restrictions

Strikes and Demonstrations

Strikes and demonstrations are common in Peru and may interrupt some tours. Roads can be blocked, transport may be delayed, and access to certain areas may change without much notice.

Under these circumstances, the tour may be modified, delayed, rescheduled, or canceled. If this happens, our operations department will coordinate directly with you. Your safety comes first, and all decisions will be made with that priority.

Lost Objects
